BROKEN

Read Ephesians 4:25-32

If you remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift...before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother or sister, and then come and offer your gift.

Matthew 5:23 - 24

When an item breaks, I have three responses: 1) I'm unhappy; 2) I'm frustrated; 3) I'm challenged to fix it. The first two responses rarely last long. In a short time, I am ready to find some tools and fix the problem. I love to take things apart and figure out how they work or how they can be repaired. I'm a fixer.

However, I find that fixing objects is easier than fixing relationships. At times, I have wounded others with my harsh words or a mean spirit. In those moments, I wish I could run to the toolbox for a wrench, screwdriver, or pliers. But a wrench or screwdriver can not reduce the pain I have caused. And words alone are not sufficient to take away another's anguish, even if I meant no harm.

When we have hurt someone with our own words, we can turn to God's word. What we find there reminds us that repentance and forgiveness are needed. When we sincerely repent, God helps us through our troubles----even those we have caused ourselves. God instructs us in ways of reconciliation(Matt. 5:23-24) and reminders to be patient (Psalm 40:1-3). Repairing broken relationship is not easy. But remembering God's promises and seeing them fulfilled in the lives of God's people in the Bible gives us hope. Our relationships can be restored because through it all, God will stand by us and guide us. God wants a deeper relationship with us.

Gary A. Miller (California)

Dear God, lead us to speak words of kindness and truth as we seek forgiveness and restoration. Amen
