Read Psalm 1:1-6
Those who trust in the Lord...shall be like a tree planted by water, sending out its roots by the stream. It shall not fear when heat comes, and it’s leaves shall stay green; in the year of drought it is not anxious.
~~Jeremiah 17:7-8~~
Before I was born, my grandfather bought a lake cabin on a winding dirt road in the country. I love walking there; the road is paved now, but it still feels secluded—close to nature and to God. The road follows a clear stream that bubbles up from underground. Even on a hot July day, this area is refreshingly shady and cool because of the huge trees that line the stream banks. The trees are old and unusually large due to the steady supply of water. The roots of these majestic trees reach toward the stream like outstretched hands.
When I read the verses above, I picture those trees lining the stream bank, tall and green. The scripture reminds me that spiritual growth results from a consistent supply of living water from God’s word and presence. Jesus said, “Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst” (John 4:14).
Spending time with the Lord refreshes our souls. When we reach out to God—through scripture study and prayer—we receive that living water. Immersing ourselves in God’s word each day brings us a vibrant spiritual life and keeps our lives joyful and strong, even in times of drought. Today I can be refreshed by living water as I spend time with God.

Dear Lord, refresh us with streams of living water so we may grow strong and bear fruit, even during our struggles. In Jesus’ name. Amen
