THE LITTLE THINGS

Read Luke 16:10-15

Whoever is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much; and whoever is dishonest in a very little is dishonest also in much.

~Luke 16:10~

Both bread bakers, my husband and I may follow the same recipes, but we approach the task of baking differently. He’s meticulous, determining water temperature with a thermometer and measuring flour volume with a scale, while I am admittedly sloppy— gauging temperature with my hand and volume by my eye. His loaves usually turn out better because these little acts of effort make a difference.

And what is true in bread baking is also true in areas of much greater consequence, like work ethic and integrity. Having integrity involves hundreds of little actions over the course of time: the choice to admit a mistake when I could easily pretend that it was someone else’s fault; the willingness to stay an extra hour at work to ensure that the job I set out to do is of the utmost quality; or the decision not to check personal email while on the clock at work.

In today’s quoted verse, Jesus tells his disciples that how we treat the little things is a good indicator of how we will treat the big things. My inferior bread doesn’t bother me, but my style of baking calls me to examine the approach I take to others tasks in my life. What does the sum total of my actions say about the person I am and the person I am becoming?

Am I faithful to the gospel in the small things?

O God, you see all, know all, and are with us in all. Help us to make good choices in all circumstances. Amen

Jesus is coming soon! Are you ready?
